Rwanda has signed a $25 million loan agreement with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) to expand water transmission and distribution systems at the Karenge Water Treatment Plant, marking a significant step in bolstering the country’s water security.

The initiative reflects the UAE’s growing role in advancing global sustainable infrastructure projects and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 6, which focuses on universal access to clean water.

The agreement, signed by ADFD Director General Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi and Rwanda’s Ambassador to the UAE, John Mirenge, underscores the UAE’s commitment to supporting development initiatives that drive economic and social progress. Senior officials from both nations attended the ceremony, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership.

“This agreement reflects ADFD’s dedication to financing infrastructure projects that contribute to economic growth and sustainable development,” Al Suwaidi said.

He emphasized that the project integrates advanced technologies to improve water system efficiency and enhance water security in Rwanda, addressing critical challenges in the sector.

For Rwanda, the partnership represents a milestone in achieving its national objectives of providing clean water to its population and creating a resilient infrastructure to meet growing demands.

“The expansion of the Karenge Water Treatment Plant is a vital initiative that aligns with our broader development plans to ensure universal access to clean water,” Mirenge said.

He added that the project would elevate living standards, generate employment, and strengthen water distribution networks in Kigali and surrounding areas.

The initiative includes constructing a state-of-the-art water treatment facility with a daily capacity of 36,000 cubic meters, coupled with an expanded transmission and distribution network to serve critical areas in the Rwandan capital. By meeting the increasing demand for water, the project is set to contribute to Rwanda’s ambitions of sustainable urbanization and economic growth.

This collaboration highlights ADFD’s role in fostering partnerships that align with the UAE’s global development vision, reinforcing its leadership in promoting sustainability and addressing key infrastructure needs worldwide.
