In a recent survey by Travel + Leisure, Kigali, Rwanda, has been named the fifth favorite city to visit in Africa, outshining many in the prestigious “World’s Best Awards” for 2024. The survey, which draws insights from a global audience, celebrated the blend of modernity and tradition across various cities in Africa and the Middle East.
Leading the rankings was Marrakesh, Morocco, scoring 89.17 out of 100, with Kigali earning an impressive 85.93. Travel + Leisure’s annual survey engages over 186,000 readers who evaluate their travel experiences, casting more than 700,000 votes across 8,700 properties worldwide. The cities were judged on sights and landmarks, culture, food, friendliness, shopping, and value.
This year’s results highlighted a diverse mix of urban destinations. Cape Town, South Africa, a regular on the list, secured the second spot. One enthusiastic voter noted, “Cape Town should be on everyone’s bucket list. The things to do range from local safaris, to land and ocean animals, history, and some of the best wine vineyards in the world. The people are friendly and the city is safe.”
Kigali, steadily rising since its debut three years ago, earned its place as a top travel destination. Described by voters as a “beautiful hub with friendly, helpful residents,” Kigali is praised for its cleanliness, safety, and vibrant culinary scene. One voter remarked, “Amazingly clean and progressive city! I felt safe walking all over. There is a wide variety of cuisine available and amazing coffee.”
With its continuous evolution and growing appeal, Kigali stands out as a must-visit destination, capturing the hearts of travelers and setting a high standard for urban tourism in Africa.
