The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) announced the issuance of new 5,000 and 2,000 Rwandan franc banknotes, effective September 3, 2024, following a Presidential Order published in the Official Gazette on August 30, 2024, the National Bank said in an emailed statement.
The new 5,000-franc note features the Kigali Convention Center and a color-changing gorilla image on the front, along with a transparent “5,000” watermark. The reverse side shows two traditional baskets, a security thread with color-changing text, and a depiction of a traditional bottle gourd.
The 2,000-franc note includes a depiction of Lake Kivu and a color-changing small basket on the front. Both notes bear the coat of arms of Rwanda and are designed with advanced security elements, including electrotype features.
The BNR emphasized that these notes will enhance security and reflect the cultural heritage of Rwanda.
