Rwanda’s urban Consumer Price Index rose by 2.5 percent in September compared to the same month last year, slowing from 5 percent recorded the month earlier, according to data from the Statistics agency.
Key drivers were an 18.2 percent increase in transport costs and a 4 percent increase in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other utilities.
On a monthly basis, the CPI increased by 1.2 percent from August 2024, driven by a 2.5 percent rise in food and non-alcoholic beverages and an 8.2 percent increase in education costs. Underlying inflation, which excludes volatile fresh food and energy prices, rose by 5 percent year-on-year and edged up 0.4 percent compared to the previous month.
On an annual basis, the local goods index rose by 1.3 percent, while the imported goods index saw a sharper increase of 6.3 percent. The fresh products index declined by 4.3 percent, whereas the energy index climbed by 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, the core index, which excludes fresh products and energy, increased by 5 percent.
