MTN Group appointed Ali Monzer as its new Chief Executive Officer, replacing Mapula Bodibe, who will take over as CEO of MTN South Sudan as part of a leadership reshuffle within the MTN Group. The transition will be effective from April 22, 2025, according to an emailed statement from Rwanda Stock Exchange.
The executive rotation aligns with MTN Group’s succession strategy and ongoing efforts to bolster operational execution under its Ambition 2025 plan.
Bodibe, who has led MTN Rwanda since 2022, has overseen key milestones, including the rollout of the company’s own 4G network, Rwanda’s first live 5G network demonstration at the Mobile World Congress Africa, and the launch of the low-cost 4G Ikosora Smartphone in collaboration with the Rwandan government. She also spearheaded a partnership with Ericsson to modernize Kigali’s network infrastructure.
Before becoming CEO, Bodibe held senior roles across MTN, including Chief Consumer Officer at MTN South Africa and Chief Marketing Officer at MTN Uganda.
Monzer, who currently heads MTN South Sudan, navigated the company through a turbulent economic environment marked by hyperinflation and currency depreciation. Under his leadership, MTN South Sudan expanded market share, achieved real revenue growth, and reclaimed the top spot in Net Promoter Score (NPS) rankings—an indicator of customer satisfaction. His tenure emphasized operational efficiency, digital innovation, and employee engagement, strengthening MTN’s market position in the country.
Before taking charge in South Sudan, Monzer was Chief Technology and Information Officer at MTN Uganda and held senior roles across the group, including General Manager, Solution Delivery at MTN Nigeria.
“I would like to thank Mapula for her leadership in MTN Rwanda. She was key to MTN launching its own 4G network, among many of her achievements. I am also excited to welcome Ali Monzer, whose extensive 21-year experience will certainly bode well for MTN Rwanda,” Chairman of MTN Rwanda Faustin Mbundu said.
The leadership transition comes as MTN Rwanda continues to consolidate its position as the country’s top telecom operator while expanding digital and financial services offerings.
